Ingredients
- 4 large egg whites, at room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp cream of tartar or a pinch of salt
- 1/2 tsp vanilla or peppermint extract (optional)
- Green gel food coloring
- Sprinkles, edible glitter, or colored sugar (for decorating)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°F (93°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a clean mixing bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating until stiff, glossy peaks form.
- Mix in extract and green food coloring until fully incorporated.
- Transfer meringue to a piping bag fitted with a star or round tip.
- Pipe tree shapes onto prepared baking sheets, starting with a wide base and tapering to a point.
- Decorate with sprinkles, stars, or edible glitter.
- Bake for 1.5 hours until dry to the touch. Turn off the oven and let cookies cool inside for 1 hour to prevent cracking.
Notes
- Use peppermint extract for a seasonal twist.
- Pipe smaller cookies for bite-sized treats.
- Dust with powdered sugar after baking for a snowy effect.
- Avoid humidity when storing—store in a dry, airtight container.
- To revive softened cookies, warm in a low oven for a few minutes.
