Ingredients

1 cup chicken broth (from 32-oz carton)

2 tablespoons steak sauce

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 lb ground beef

2 tablespoons butter

8 oz mushrooms, thinly sliced

1 cup white onion, coarsely chopped (from 1 small onion)

1 teaspoon Montreal steak seasoning

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Instructions

Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, steak sauce, and Dijon mustard. Set aside.

Cook the beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.

Sauté the vegetables: In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter. Sauté the mushrooms and onions for about 5 minutes, until softened and browned.

Season and thicken: Sprinkle the Montreal steak seasoning over the veggies and stir. Add the flour, stirring for another minute to cook out the raw taste.

Add the broth mixture: Pour in the chicken broth, steak sauce, and mustard mixture. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer. Let cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Serve: Spoon the mixture onto buns and serve immediately. Add cheese, pickles, or lettuce if desired.

Notes

Cheese lovers: Melt cheese on top before serving. Swiss, cheddar, or provolone work well!

Spicy twist: Add diced jalapeños or hot sauce to the sauce mixture for a kick.

Vegetarian option: Swap beef with plant-based ground meat or lentils for a hearty vegetarian version.
