Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough or 3 cups frozen tater tots
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper and cook until softened, about 4–5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease if necessary.
- Stir in ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and black pepper.
- Simmer the mixture for 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Transfer the sloppy joe mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
- Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
- Arrange biscuit dough pieces or tater tots evenly over the casserole.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until the topping is golden and fully cooked.
- Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Ground turkey can replace ground beef for a lighter version.
- Add vegetables such as corn or diced carrots for extra texture.
- For a spicy variation, mix in chili powder or a small amount of hot sauce.
- Mashed potatoes or cooked pasta can replace the biscuit or tater tot topping.
- Prepare the beef mixture ahead of time to make assembly quicker.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
