Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough or 3 cups frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper and cook until softened, about 4–5 minutes.

  7. Simmer the mixture for 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Transfer the sloppy joe mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  9. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
  10. Arrange biscuit dough pieces or tater tots evenly over the casserole.
  11. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the topping is golden and fully cooked.
  12. Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Ground turkey can replace ground beef for a lighter version.
  • Add vegetables such as corn or diced carrots for extra texture.
  • For a spicy variation, mix in chili powder or a small amount of hot sauce.
  • Mashed potatoes or cooked pasta can replace the biscuit or tater tot topping.
  • Prepare the beef mixture ahead of time to make assembly quicker.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
