Loco Moco is the ultimate Hawaiian comfort food! This hearty dish features a juicy beef patty served over steamed rice, smothered in rich gravy, and topped with a perfectly fried sunny-side-up egg. It’s a satisfying, flavorful meal that’s quick to make and guaranteed to hit the spot.
2 pounds ground beef
2 cups beef stock
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups steamed white rice (for serving)
4 large eggs (for frying)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying patties and eggs)
Make the beef patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 portions and shape into patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
Cook the beef patties: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Set aside.
Make the gravy: In the same skillet, add beef stock, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Scrape up any browned bits and simmer for 5 minutes to thicken. Optionally, make a slurry with cornstarch and water to thicken further. Season with salt and pepper.
Fry the eggs: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a separate pan. Crack the eggs into the pan and fry sunny-side-up until the whites are set, leaving the yolks runny. Flip if you prefer over-easy eggs.
Assemble the Loco Moco: Place a scoop of steamed rice on each plate, top with a beef patty, pour over the gravy, and finish with a fried egg on top.
Serve: Enjoy your delicious Loco Moco hot!
You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
Add sautéed vegetables like spinach or bell peppers for extra nutrition.
Try adding shredded cheese on top of the patty for an added layer of flavor.
