Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture with melted butter, egg, and remaining sugar.
  3. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal portions.
  7. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place in a greased baking dish.
  8. Cover and let rise again for about 30 minutes until puffy.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15–18 minutes until lightly golden.
  10. Brush warm rolls with melted butter before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
  • Add garlic powder and herbs for a savory variation.
  • Brush with honey butter for a slightly sweet version.
  • Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top before baking for extra flavor.
  • Store rolls at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Freeze baked rolls for up to 2 months.
